The story the sea told me
Lay open on the table
As I busied myself a perimeter around its truths
Always a wide berth
To protect my earthly longing
My trademark belonging
That makes me me
But not to the sea
To her, I am soluble
Like ink to water
Salt-scrubbed from pages
Happy to be free
To her, I am she
I love this! Especially “I busied myself a perimeter around its truths…..to protect my earthly longing”. Wonderful!
Thank you, Sherry!
This is beyond beautiful! 🙂 I especially love; “To her, I am soluble like ink to water/salt-scrubbed from pages.”
Thank you so much, Sanaa, and Happy New Year!
So beautiful… I miss the sea. It has been a while since we spoke. Too many lovely lines to choose just one.
Thank you, Susie. I find the sea is always with me, but I look forward to opportunities to physically walk on her shores.
I really like the line “Salt-scrubbed from pages”. On its own, it would make me think of sweat and tears. But after reading of the speaker relationship with the see, the image brings to mind the sound of waves, warm sand, and understood freedom.
Mmm, I like your vision for this poem – both of them.
And the sea and me are we! I got splashed.
This made me go to so many places in my mind – I am water – do I flow? Am I soluble? – nice to dissolve into ocean. Where does my perimeter end? – where do I begin? Beyond the questions, I appreciate your poem because on the one hand, I am terrified of the ocean’s vastness. On the other, I am enthralled and love it.
Oh H! I love the metaphors here. It’s a poem that resonates with me. Wish I’d written this!
Mmm, lovely. At first I though ‘soluble’ indicated annihilation, but re-reading I saw it more as becoming one with the sea – a marvellous freedom indeed.
“Always a wide berth to protect my earthly longing.” I love that! I walked a wild and windy beach today – big waves, happy dogs with loopy grins!
To her, I am soluble… oh I just went round and got stuck on that line… love it!
This poem gives a real sense of completion – the imagery rich and inviting
There are so many reasons to love the sea. There are so many ways to write about her. Yours is not only a depiction of a wonderful relationship but shows how we can be a drop, an ocean, and be one with her. Love how your poem can take and convey so many meanings. Outstanding write, as always!
I thought of the places that become so much a part of who we are (or had they been part of us all along, just waiting for us to recognize that link). Sometimes the thought of being part of something so vast makes me very dizzy. Other times it feels comforting, knowing there is a place where I fit.
what stories the sea can tell us!
i think we are linked to the sea in more ways we can understand. she gives us food, gives us salt. we built communities on her shores, travel on her waters to reach faraway places. and we are in awe of her might and rage.
i have come back to reread your poem again.
The sea recognises its/her own!
How I love the sea. It bids me to walk in and keep going – I have long had this yearning. But I don’t think I will do it…

These words: “To her, I am she” I think can stand on its own. A powerful statement.

Riders of the Tempest: The Story of WE
by H. Hennenburg
There is no “I”. There is no “you.” There is only WE. “Reality is in the possibilities,” and Riders of the Tempest is a quest for the heart of what can be.
This collection of poems by H. Hennenburg tells the story of WE. Born from Supernova, we bear the imprint of the universe: the mandate to expand. Gripped by a deep yearning, we march into a tempest…a great storm…a war between our desire to expand as individuals and our desire to expand into the truth of our oneness. We believe we are mere “echoes to the sea and gathering storm,” but there is more to the universe than what we see. We are “more than the caged experience of sight.” Endowed with an infinite stream of choices, what happens in our story if we reach for more?
